About The Event

Kelly Hayes Mcalonie, FAIA presents twenty years of research on Louise Blanchard Bethune, FAIA (1856-1913), the first professional woman architect in the United States. Despite Bethune’s fame during her lifetime, she is an enigma. Hayes McAlonie has sought to change that through a series of initiatives to shed light on this hidden figure of American architecture. Her most recent project is Bethune's biography, published by SUNY Press. Hayes McAlonie will share her insights on the obstacles Bethune encountered in pursuing architecture and her many victories along the way. Hayes McAlonie will describe the architectural profession of the Gilded Age and the parallels between the profession of that era to today’s.

Kelly will be signing copies of her book at the event!
